The role of women in politics

Abstract

Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed.  If I fail, no one will say, "She doesn't have what it takes."  They will say, "Women don't have what it takes."

                                                                                          Clare Boothe Luce

After reading this famous statement about women, we can easily present the status and position in society, the importance of the fairer gender. In addition, the one who wrote it anticipated that in the twenty-first century will exceed the categorical significance of women far more than the other two in the previous millennia. However, usually it is spoken only in general, not to mention in the old quarter of the individual. That is, in every country of the ancient times, has developed its own political and economic, even to some extent ethnic ideology with respect to women and girls in general. Moreover, usually those, shall we say, traditional views about the fairer gender is not affected in the current environment of market and political economy of the world. Therefore, this work covers various aspects of women not only in everyday life, but also in politics too. Since our country is one of the fastest developing countries in the former Soviet Union, I think that all will be interesting to see and compare the position and status of women in our country regarding the policies and other aspects too. For example, we take the approximate number of ministries in our country, and find in each section, as they are composed of women in any meaningful posts. It is said that about twenty ministries that function in Kazakhstan today and about five to six women executives who hold high positions. We will not go away, take for instance our Parliament. If you request a list of internet last Convocation, we can see a small number of MPs who belong to the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Approximately ten to twenty. Nevertheless, this does not mean that they can have the power to change some attitudes in our established mentality. That is, I want to leave the reader to the question about women's rights in Kazakhstan. Considered whether the rights of women in expected percentage, or not? Since the politics is generally not involved in tracking down answers, but rather leaves the people for further reflection.

Theoretical findings

To find the underlying cause of my idea it would be better to understand the term of gender in society. Then it will be easier to understand deeper the role of women in politics. Gender roles refer to the set of social and behavioral norms that are considered socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex in the context of a specific culture, and which differ widely between cultures and historical periods. There are differences of opinion as to whether observed differences in behavior and personality between genders are entirely due to cultural or social factors, and are therefore the products of socialization or to what extent gender differences are due to biological and physiological differences. Therefore, what I want to say that according to the gender theory women comparing with men are considered the weak members in society. However, remember it was in the past. Nowadays life is changing and beliefs and opinions are correspondingly are also changing. As we all know politics, sociology, we can philosophy, and to some extent, even psychologies have a close relationship with each other. We can fulfill the missed knowledge with the help of these subjects. Therefore, what I want I want to say that while the sociology is turned in the science as the scientific subject, in Soviet Union it is treated not being as an appropriate subject to study. Founders of sociological institutions were treated as a small threat and the most dangerous people in the Soviet Union. The question is why? I think the answer to this question will not be too hard. According to the dictators and heads of state, sociology considered as a science, stirs the human mind. Why should not allowed in those days to study the sociology? You understand why. So I thought: Why do we still see that the psychology of a woman's place - at the stove, and why we started to require an equal treatment of women in our country a little bit later comparing  with Western countries and the USA. The answer is also obvious. Social sciences in these countries began to study a lot earlier, which led to such a rapidly developing. Women in Politics Beginning with the early nineteen hundreds, women from all over the country have bounded together, forming leagues and clubs for equal rights. They are beginning to become corporate executives in businesses, and popular in the field of medicine and law. Barriers of all kinds have been broken, well, all except a few, mainly in politics and with the information I have collected I will show why. Politics…when one stops and thinks of the word “politics” what naturally comes to mind? Our founding fathers, Presidents George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson; Is society to blame for the misconception that women do not hold important roles in government and participate in making important decisions for our country? Not really, people just don’t hear or read about women in politics as often as they do about men. As most people learn throughout elementary and junior high or middle school, our nation first formed government in 1776 when Thomas Jefferson first drafted USA’s constitution. During this time, women did not have a role in government, nor would they for the next one hundred and eight years, until a woman would try to run for office. “In 1884, Belva Ann Lockwood – the first woman to try a case before the United States Supreme Court – ran for Presidency” (Arenofsky 14). Well, to no surprise, she lost, but her groundbreaking campaign made it possible and easier for Jeannette Rankin, thirty-three years later, to run and become elected to Congress for the state of Montana. However, even with this groundbreaking experience, women were still looked down upon for their lack of experience. It was not until 1920 when women's suffrage ended and the nineteenth amendment to the constitution, granting women the right to vote, that woman was formally introduced into politics. However, even with voting privileges, women were still looked at as weak feeble creatures. The lack of confidence and the inability to be seen as strong-minded females who were not afraid to voice their opinion hurt the female gender immensely. It wasn’t until “Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, crisscrossed the country speaking about social problems and serving as the quintessential role model for the politically active female” that women began to witness how to present themselves with confidence (Arenofsky 14). Finally, with women's confidence on the rise and their new understanding and attitudes toward government, women were starting to attain a higher status in the political arena. The big break for women came from the decision by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who in 1933 appointed Frances Perkins to the cabinet as Secretary of labor (Hogan 4). With this big break, women were finally moving forward in government and there was no looking back. So, after all of this hard work and dedication by early feminists to achieve a voice in politics, was it worth the struggles and did it pay off? Rosiska Darcy de Oliveria, journalist for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Courier, believes so. She states, women's rise to power and their participation in politics are the vital signs of a healthy democracy, which would make good sense since the United States is a free country where everyone is suppose to be equal to their neighbor (26). However, others believe that political women are causing great harm to their character” (Oliveria 28). Oliveria states that, women in positions of power must constantly prove that they can behave like men. They keep quiet about having to look after children, run a household and care for elderly parents. Bringing those issues out into the open would mean admitting “'flaws'” that men do not have… Women have changed, but the world of work has not and they are reacting to the point of exhaustion.

Conclusion

Nowadays, women's situation is much better then in the past. Women have the right to study, to work and do everything as well as men. They can be doctor, businessman, writer, reporter...whoever they want to be, even president if they have ability. They are respected, not being oppressed and considered inferior anymore but an independent, important class like men. They are not only treated equally, they are also treated better than normal because they are considered as the weaker (in the positive meaning). Motherhood is still women's primary role, but women take the role as human who improve society as well as men, too. A new age has begun for working-class women as workers in their own right.
