1. Meet the Royal Family.

The Swedish Royal Family consists of King Carl XVI Gustaf, born 1946, Queen Silvia, born 1943, Crown Princess Victoria, born 1977, Prince Daniel, born 1973, Princess Estelle, born 2012, Prince Carl Philip, born 1979, and Princess Madeleine, born 1982.

In addition to the members of the Royal Family, the Swedish Royal Court also includes Princess Lilian, born 1915, and Princess Birgitta, born 1937, married to Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern.

2. H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf.

 

Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus, King of Sweden, Duke of Jämtland, became Sweden's Head of State on 15 September 1973 at the age of 27, succeeding his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf.

The King's motto is: “For Sweden - With the times".

Carl Gustaf was born on 30 April 1946. He is son of then Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, who died in a plane crash in 1947, and Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, who died in 1972.

King Carl Gustaf married Miss Silvia Renate Sommerlath on 19 June 1976 in Stockholm Cathedral. They have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

The King and Queen reside at Drottningholm Palace.

          Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of Sweden, was born on 30 April 1946 at Haga Palace.

He is son of then Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha. He was baptised at the Palace Church on 7 June 1946 and named Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus.

          The King has four older sisters: the Princesses Margaretha, Birgitta, Désirée and Christina. His father Prince Gustaf Adolf died in a plane crash in 1947 in Copenhagen.         Princess Sibylla died in Stockholm in 1972.

          With the accession of Gustaf VI Adolf to the throne in 1950, following the death of Gustaf V, the four-year-old Carl Gustaf became Crown Prince.  
  
          Crown Prince Carl Gustaf became the Swedish Head of State at the age of 27, following the death of King Gustaf VI Adolf, who died on 15 September 1973.

The new King took “For Sweden - With the times" as his motto, thereby declaring his intention of meeting the demands of society on a modern monarch.  
 

2.1.  Education 

          The Crown Prince was taught privately at the Royal Palace of Stockholm during his pre-school years. He started school in the autumn of 1952, attending Broms School followed by the Sigtuna Boarding School. He graduated from upper secondary school in 1966.

School was followed by military service. The Crown Prince completed two and a half years' training in the Army, Navy and Air Force, with a special emphasis on naval training. Amongst other military activities, he took part in a long voyage on the mine-laying vessel Älvsnabben in the winter of 1966-67.

2.2. Naval Officer Examination 

          The Crown Prince passed his Naval Officer Examination in 1968. He later completed a command course at the Swedish National Defence College and complemented his naval training with officer´s duties on board various ships in the Swedish Navy.  
          In 1968 The Crown Prince began a one-year programme of academic studies comprising History, Sociology, Political Science, Financial Law and Economics at the University of Uppsala. Later he also studied Economics at the University of Stockholm.  
 

2.3. Practical social studies.

The Crown Prince then followed a specially composed programme of field trips to national and local authorities, industries, factories, laboratories and schools.

He studied the Swedish judicial system, social welfare organisations and institutions, trade unions and employer associations, with a special emphasis on the work of the Riksdag (the Swedish Parliament), the Government and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

2.4. International studies.

In order to acquire international experience The Crown Prince participated in the work of the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations in New York and spent time working with SIDA (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) in Africa. He also spent considerable time in London - at Hambro Bank, the Swedish Embassy and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce - and in France at the Alfa Laval plant in Nevers.

In addition, The Crown Prince represented Gustaf VI Adolf on a number of official occasions. In 1970, for example, he headed the Swedish delegation to the World Exposition in Osaka, Japan.

2.5. Family.

During the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany in 1972, The Crown Prince met Miss Silvia Renate Sommerlath.

She was working at the Games as an interpreter and hostess. Silvia Sommerlath was born in Heidelberg on 23 December 1943. She is the daughter of Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice, née de Toledo, both now deceased.

2.6. The Royal Wedding in 1976.

The engagement of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath was officially announced on 12 March 1976. They were married three months later on 19 June 1976 at Stockholm Cathedral.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, born on 14 July 1977, Prince Carl Philip, born on 13 May 1979 and Princess Madeleine, born on 10 June 1982.  
  
          Under the Order of Succession introduced in 1980 by the Swedish Parliament, the throne passes to the eldest child.

The Royal Family resided at the Royal Palace of Stockholm until 1981, when they moved to Drottningholm Palace.

3. H.M. Queen Silvia.

 

Silvia, The Queen of Sweden, was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on 23 December 1943. Her parents were the late Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice, née de Toledo, also deceased.

Silvia Renate Sommerlath and King Carl XVI Gustaf met at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. 
  
          They announced their engagement at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on 12 March 1976, and they were married on 19 June the same year.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

Queen Silvia was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on 23 December 1943.  

She is the daughter of the late Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice, née de Toledo, also deceased. The Queen has two older brothers: Ralf and Walther Sommerlath. Her third brother, Jörg Sommerlath, passed away in 2006.

The Sommerlath family lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil between 1947 and 1957, where Walther Sommerlath held various positions, including President of the Brazilian subsidiary of Swedish company Uddeholm. The family returned to West Germany in 1957.  
 

3.1. Education and Professional Life. 

Silvia Renate Sommerlath graduated from high school in Düsseldorf in 1963. Between 1965 and 1969 she studied at the Munich School of Interpreting, majoring in Spanish.

After graduating, Silvia Sommerlath worked at the Argentinean Consulate in Munich.

3.2. Work with the Olympic Committee.

Silvia Sommerlath worked as a hostess trainer with the Organising Committee for the Munich Olympic Games between 1971 and 1973. She then became Deputy Head of Protocol of the Organising Committee for the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.

3.3. Family.

Silvia Sommerlath met Crown Prince Carl Gustaf at the 1972 Olympic Games.

The engagement of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia Renate Sommerlath was announced on 12 March 1976. They were married on 19 June the same year, at Stockholm Cathedral.

Initially the Royal Family lived in an apartment at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. In 1982 they moved to Drottningholm Palace.

3.4.Official Duties.

Queen Silvia often accompanies King Carl Gustaf on official trips in Sweden and state visits abroad.

She makes regular visits to national and municipal authorities, as well as schools, universities and other educational institutions, in order to gather information.

She frequently participates in anniversary events, openings of conferences and symposia and other official events.

The Queen is a member of the Lutheran Church of Sweden.

3.5. Speaks six languages.

In addition to Swedish, The Queen also speaks German, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

4. H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria.

 

Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland, is the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and was born on 14 July 1977.

The declaration of Crown Princess Victoria's majority took place in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on 14 July 1995.

The Crown Princess will be Sweden's first female Head of State from the Bernadotte Dynasty. In modern times Sweden has only had two queens regnant, Kristina and Ulrika Eleonora.

Tuesday 24 February, 2009, The Crown Princess and Mr Daniel Westling announced their engagement at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The wedding took place on 19 June, 2010.

 

5. H.R.H. Prince Daniel.

 

Olof Daniel, Prince of Sweden, Duke of Västergötland, was born in Örebro on 15 September, 1973. His parents are Ewa Kristina Westling and Olle Gunnar Westling.

Daniel Westling and Crown Princess Victoria got to know each other in 2001.

They announced their engagement at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on Tuesday 24 February, 2009. The wedding took place on 19 June, 2010.

 

 

 

 

6. H.R.H. Princess Estelle.

 

Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Östergötland was born on February 23, 2012. She is the first child of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

7. H.R.H. Prince Carl Philip

 

Carl Philip Edmund Bertil, Prince of Sweden, Duke of Värmland, was born on 13 May 1979.  
  
He is the second oldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

8. H.R.H. Princess Madeleine.

 

Madeleine Thérèse Amelie Josephine, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, was born on 10 June 1982.

She is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The engagement between Princess Madeleine and Mr Christopher O'Neill was announced Thursday October 25, 2012.

9. H.R.H. Princess Lilian.

Lilian, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Halland, was born on 30 August 1915 in Wales.

She married the current King's uncle, Prince Bertil, on 7 December 1976 at Drottningholm Palace Chapel. Prince Bertil died on 5 January 1997.

Princess Lilian fulfils a number of duties that were previously the responsibility of Prince Bertil, particularly in the field of sport.
