This essay will give you a brief overview of the Ukrainian educational system which is continuously changing due to the requirements of the transition period. Nowadays one of the most important aim for central and local authorities is to give equal possibilities in getting top quality education for all citizens. The system of education extends from pre-school to higher education and every level (preschool, primary, secondary, higher and postgraduate) has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Public institutions do have their own disadvantages, but education there might still be the right choice. First and foremost, a public education is free, of course, this means that the quality of the academic programs is not as high as those of private; classrooms are usually larger, meaning that there are more students and less individual attention from teachers. All public schools adhere to state and federal regulatory standards and the curriculum and grading are standardized.

The system of higher and secondary education brings forward such objectives of the reforms as: to decentralize the higher education system, to develop a new financial mechanism, to give more academic freedom to faculties and students (A Global Guide to Management Education, 2006). All secondary schools and universities until recently have been funded by the state, but nowadays a lot of private fee-paying secondary schools and universities have appeared.

Students that study at state expense receive a standard scholarship, insufficient to cover the basic living expenses. Most universities have no opportunities to provide subsidized hostels, and Ukrainian libraries have no possibilities to supply required books for all registered students.

Ukraine has joined to Bologna Process but such a serious factor as the absence of European education standards still remains in our higher education system and prevents us from getting closer to the European educational space (The day weekly digest, 2009).
