ABSTRACT

Vologda optical-and-mechanical plant is one of the most update enterprises in the northwest region of the Russian Federation. It specializes in producing optoelectronic and optomechanical instruments. Nowadays VOMZ disposes of an exclusively wide range of technological re-divisions and production facilities that allow manufacturing a long product list. The sight, rangefinder and laser canals of aim taking and a ballistic computer are the main compounds of these complicated optoelectronic devices. Day and night hunting sights made by the VOMZ JSC are well-known to the customers of Russia and abroad. Being a multipurpose enterprise, the VOMZ JSC produces not only optics but sewing machines, baking ovens and medical equipment.

High achievements of VOMZ JSC results from a stubborn and conscientious labor of its stuff, that turned it up into one of the best large-scale optic enterprises of RF.

Вологодский оптико-механический завод входит в число наиболее современных предприятий Северо-Запада РФ. Предприятие специализируется на производстве оптико-электронных и оптико-механических приборов. В настоящее время ВОМЗ располагает исключительно разнообразной гаммой технологических переделов, позволяющих изготавливать обширную номенклатуру сложных изделий. Прицел, длинномер и лазерный прицел винтовки, и баллистический вычислитель – это основные компоненты сложного оптико-электронного оборудования. Дневные и ночные охотничьи прицелы изготовленные на ОАО ВОМЗ хорошо известны российским покупателям и заграничным. Будучи многоцелевым предприятием, ВОМЗ производит не только оптические приборы, но и швейные машины, выпекающие духовки и медицинское оборудование.

DANCING, CARING & PUBLIC RELATIONS

At first sight, dancing to hip hop music, caring for physically and mentally handicapped adults and public relations work do not seem to have a lot in common. However Danish student Kastania Cleissner Rasmussen, 20, has revealed that they all are united by her current study of Communication at New York University

"Spanish is huge in the States, and as an upcoming communications executive I would like to be able to represent the community that uses the second most widely-spoken language," says Kastania.

Dancing is a passion for me and I know whatever else I do with my career it will always involve dance in some way.

"Dancing and performing, working with people and projecting an image that captures the public attention are all important aspects of communication..." explains Kastania, "and they are all things that I love doing."

Kastania began dancing ‘jazz, tap, ballet and lyrical’ when she was just five years old. Later, in her senior year at high school, she became captain of her school dance team: "I'm very proud of that," she says with a smile. "After that I found a great studio in Copenhagen and I really got into hip hop. I was dancing for four hours a day and effectively 'working to dance.' It is a passion for me and I know that whatever else I do with my career it will always involve dance in some way."

Kastania was primarily educated in Nevada, USA, but spent every summer with her paternal grandparents in Denmark. When she was 18 she decided she wanted to spend the whole year in her native country, working independently, in order to reconnect with the culture. It was here that she began working with physically and mentally handicapped adults. "It was a very emotionally demanding job because everything they do is exact routine. The unvaried structure of their daily life is what they want and need, but it helped me appreciate much more what I have; the fact that I can get up in the morning and do pretty much whatever I want."

Between two countries

Living between two countries made Kastania even more interested in learning about other cultures. She decided to move to New York to study communication, partly because of the large immigrant communities living there. "Spanish is huge in the States, and as an upcoming communications executive I would like to be able to represent the community that uses the second most widely-spoken language."

Kastania says that the communications department at New York University does a great job in encouraging their students to study abroad. The University has a base in Madrid and because Kastania wanted to improve her Spanish, it seemed the obvious next step to take. "What I am doing right now is cool and has helped me excel in Spanish," she explains. "I do an intensive Spanish grammar course plus 'Spain Today' and 'Hispanic cultures' courses, but they are all taught in Spanish. With this immersion into the language, I have very quickly been able to understand a surprising amount."

Social life - Spanish Style

Kastania clearly loves Madrid — she describes it as 'amazing' – but has found some aspects of the culture difficult. "In the US and Denmark social life takes place largely in your home, whereas in Spain it takes place outside. I have been told by the Senora in my flat that I can't have people over, for example, and that is difficult because as a student I cannot afford to go out all the time. Nor can I go over to my friend’s house and watch a movie or something because it is not accepted there either."

Not in a rush

After some searching, Kastania has discovered a good hip hop studio in Madrid but says that there is not as big a dance culture as she has found in Copenhagen and New York. "Young Spanish people in general are more into techno, electronic music and rock," she says.

"Next year I am going to take a year out just to dance and study hip hop because it is something that I really want to do and I feel it is now or never. Education is important to me but I am young and I am in no rush to finish it quickly. Ideally I expect to end up working as a PR representative for a dancer or working for a dance company, so in the meantime I am going to focus on the two aspects that are going to help me achieve such a job — dance and communication.'

Между двух стран

Проживание между двумя  странами сделало Кастанию более заинтересованной к изучению культур других стран. Она решила переехать в Нью-Йорк для обучения связи с общественностью, в частности, потому что большинство иммиграционных сообществ живет там. «Испанский язык очень распространен во многих штатах и поэтому исполняет коммуникативную функцию. Кастания говорит, что отдел международных отношений Нью-Йоркого университета проводит большую работу по поощрению своих студентов обучающихся заграницей. Социальная жизнь –  испанский стиль

Кастания определенно влюбилась в Мадрид – она описывает его как «сказочный» - но выделяла некоторые аспекты трудными в их культуре. «В США и Дании социальная жизнь занимает большое место в твоих личных отношениях, тогда как в Испании социальная жизнь занимает большое место в обществе. Я разговаривала со старшим в моей квартире и выяснилось, что я не могу выходить с людьми гулять, например это нехорошо если я буду позволять себе часто выходить гулять куда-то. Так же не могу я пойти в дом к друзьям смотреть кино или что-нибудь еще делать, потому что это не допустимо там.

Не торопись

После некоторых поисков, Кастания открыла хорошую хип-хоп студию в Мадриде, но сказала, что не такая большая как были в Копенгагене и Нью-Йорке. «Молодежь Испании в основном интересуется техно, электронной музыкой и роком,» она говорит.

«В следующем году я  собираюсь взять год отпуска  для того, чтобы танцевать и  учится хип-хопу, потому что это то , чем я действительно хочу заниматься и я чувствую, что надо заниматься этим сейчас или никогда. Образование важная часть моей жизни, но я молода и я не тороплюсь закончить его побыстрей. Идеальней всего я вижу себя в конечном счете в качестве пиар представителя танцора или работником компании занимающейся танцами, таким образом в данное время я собираюсь сфокусироваться в двух направлениях , которые помогут мне добиться такой работы – танцевать и совершенствовать международные отношения.

WELCOME TO MONTREAL –  A CITY WITH MUCH TO OFFER

Norwegian students who entered universities in Montreal, were (before the summer) very likely to be welcomed by Line Kaarhus at a social gathering held by ANSA (Association of Norwegian Students Abroad)

Line was the ANSA contact person in Montreal, and in the beginning of each school year she set up a picnic in a park for the Norwegian students.

A few months later, in December she would host a Christmas party, and throughout the school year she invited Norwegian students to pub nights the first Friday every month.

"It might sound overwhelming, but organizing the parties hardly takes any time at all," said the 24 year old Norwegian bachelor's student before her graduation. "The invitations are mostly done by email and via Facebook."

Line was the ANSA representative at McGill University, where most Norwegian students in Montreal are enrolled. On behalf of ANSA she also answered emails and general inquiries regarding studies in Canada, and she updated ANSA Canada's web pages. Once a year she participated in ANSA's North American congress, which this year was held in Las Vegas.

"Although the work is not paid, I find the ANSA work very rewarding," line said. "I get to meet new people and I see many happy faces at the parties and gatherings."

Popular activities

Canada is one of the best ANSA countries in terms- of membership. As many as 90 per cent of all Norwegian students in Canada are ANSA members, which is a compliment to Line and other ANSA Canada volunteers and chairmen.

The Christmas party is the most popular activity. Normally, 30 people turn up, but three years ago there were 50, including some professors with Norwegian connections.

"ANSA has a high standing among the Norwegian students, and I know Swedes and Danes are a little envious of us," said Line. "As a student you don't go abroad to hang out with people from you own country, but once in a while it feels good to be together. The pub nights are especially good for new students with limited social networks yet."

Line was doing her bachelor's in management and graduated in May. At the time her future plans were still vague, however they involved Kevin, her American fiance, who finished his master’s thesis in May. First the plan was to travel to Norway for the summer, where Line would work her regular summer job at the local bank. In the process of looking for work, they were both keeping their eyes open towards the English speaking part of the world.

High quality education

Line grew up in Sauda, a small industrial town on the Norwegian West coast. She adores the place, but knew already at the age of twelve that she wanted to study abroad. It was an advisor at her American high school who suggested she contacted Canadian universities for high quality education at a lower cost than in the US.

To Line it was also important that the Canadian bachelor degree is eligible to funding from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund already from first year, which is not the case with US bachelors. Besides, Line said she felt Canada was a safe place to live.

"In Montreal I can walk almost all over, even at night. That I could never have done in the US."

The view from her bedroom in down town Montreal was one of tall buildings, in other words quite different from the spectacular mountains and the fjord surrounding her home town Sauda. Her life in Montreal was certainly different, but she still liked it a lot.

Health agreement

"This city has so much to offer. For example in terms of food, you can get everything, and it can be very cheap. Rent is also inexpensive, and the city is known for its' night life and many cultural events, for example well known festivals - jazz, film, comedy, firework..."

When Line was young, her dream was to study in the US. She ended up in Canada, now thinking it was the best in many ways.

"Did I mention that the province of Quebec and Norway has a health agreement, securing all Norwegian students free health treatment when needed?" she said smilingly.

Лайн была представлена АНСА в МакГилл университете, куда поступило большинство норвежских студентов в Монреале. От имени АНСА она также отвечала на электронную почту и главным образом расспрашивала относительно обучения в Канаде, и она обновляла канадскую веб страничку АНСА.
