  Introduction 

 

• The Lake Poets  introduced into poetry short forceful words and constructions of everyday speech. They brought sound and colour into verse. They appreciated folklore art and insisted that poetry should be linked with folk traditions of a nation. All of them were humanists. That‘s why I’ve  chosen this theme for my project work.

 

 

 

 

• As a literary current, it came into being at the end of the 18^th century. England was full of contradictions. The social struggle was sharpened by the influence of the French Revolution

 

 

 

 

Romantic Writers.

 

• Romantic writers centre their attention upon the wealth of the inner life of a man. Nature plays an important part in the pages of their work.

 

 

 

 

Romanticism in England is represented  by poets William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor  Coleridge and Robert Southey (the so-called  Lake School)

 

     Lake School was called so after the lakeland in northern England where the three poets spent much of their time and whose beauties they described in their poems.

• In his youth Wordsworth was keep on the ideas of the Great French Revolution and sang its praises. But then his views changed and he became a staunch conservative. Wordsworth made his first appearance as poet in 1793. In 1798 there came out “ Lyrical Ballads” composed by Wordsworth  and Coleridge. It was republished in 1800 with the preface by Wordsworth which contained an expression of his poetic faith.

• In 1793 Wordsworth wrote a poem, “Guilt and Sorrow”. It is about a homeless sailor who was driven to crime, and a lonely woman who had lost her husband and three children in the war; all suffer from the cruelty of the law, but the comfort Wordsworth offers is religion.

 

 

 

 

 

       “Guilt and Sorrow”.

 

My heart leaps up when I behold 
A rainbow in the sky: 
So was it when my life began, 
So is it now I am a man, 
So be it when I shall grow old 
Or let me die! 
The Child is father of the Man: 
And I could wish my days to be 
Bound each to each by natural piety.

 

 

 

 

 

Wordsworth’s poetry.

 

• In many of his poems, Wordsworth describes and praises nature which becomes the main theme of all his works. The most notable of his verses are connected with the village  theme and description of the country-side. They are of a high musical quality and convey various shades in man’s mood very vividly, thus arousing the reader’s response. Wordsworth’s language is very and flexible. The dominating emotional key is gentle sadness.

• I wandered lonely as a cloud 
  That floats on high o'er vales and hills, 
  When all at once I saw a crowd, 
  A host, of golden daffodils; 
  Beside the lake, beneath the trees, 
  Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. 
   
  Continuous as the stars that shine 
  And twinkle on the milky way, 
  They stretched in never-ending line 
  Along the margin of a bay: 
  Ten thousand saw I at a glance, 
  Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

 

• Я бродил одиноко, как облако, что плывёт высоко над долинами и холмами. 
  Как вдруг я увидел рядом с озером, под деревьями безбрежность золотых нарциссов, трепещущих и танцующих на ветру.
• Бесконечные, как звезды, что мерцают во Млечном пути, они тянулись нескончаемым потоком  вдоль берега: с первого взгляда я увидел их тысячи, весело танцующих с запрокинувшими головками.

  поток течет,  
  рогатый скот пасется, не поднимая головы. Пахарь  кричит-иду-иду!  
  Маленькие облака плывут,  
  Синее небо простирается,

• She dwelt among the untrodden ways
•   Beside the springs of Dove; 
• A maid whom there were none to praise,   
•   And very few to love.       
•  
• A violet by a mossy stone     
•   Half-hidden from the eye!   
• —Fair as a star, when only one
•   Is shining in the sky.      
•  
• She lived unknown, and few could know
•   When Lucy ceased to be;     
• But she is in her grave, and, O!
•   The difference to me!

 

• В излучинах холодных рек,
•   Непроходимых троп
• Никто не видел девы бег,
•   Не посвящал ей строк.
•  
• Фиалка пряталась всегда
•   В снегах таких высот,
• Что вырастала, как звезда,
•   Затмив весь небосвод.
•  
• Никто не знал Люси и час,
•   Когда она ушла.

The Stylistic and Language                           peculiarities.

 

• The style of William Wordsworth’s poetry is very colourful. It is rich in stylistic devices such as in:
• metaphors: my heart leaps up, cloud are sailing
• epithets: golden daffodils, sprightly dance
• Similes ( or comparisons of one thing to another) : lonely as a cloud, continuous as the stars that shine, fair as a star
• Hyperbola ( exaggerated statements ): ten thousand saw, at a glance, when only one is shining in the shy.

 

 

 

 

             Conclusion

 

• Working at my project work I’ve come to the conclusion that: Romanticism and its ideas influenced greatly the “Lake Poets” creative activity. The style and language of the “ Lake poets “ is truly colorful romantic, and so this poetry is still popular nowadays, it is read and admired by people in many countries.
