French borrowings in the English language

Since the Norman Conquest in 1066 the French language became more and more important. English nobility and other important positions in the church, military and other institutions were newly occupied by the French invaders. Now the upper class in England was replaced by Normans and French became their dominant language. However, the new ruling class formed only a minority of the population and the language existed side by side .The new kings of England spoke French, took French wives and lived mostly in France.

During the Old English period, most additions to the English vocabulary were based on native English words. Old words were given new meanings, new words were formed by the addition of prefixes or suffixes, or by compounding. Latin was the most influential of foreign languages. The Scandinavians also influenced the language of English during the Old English period. From the eighth (8th)century, Scandinavians had raided and eventually settled in England, especially in the north and the east. This prolonged unfriendly contact had a considerable and varied influence on the English vocabulary. The Middle English period was marked by a great extension of foreign influence on English. The Norman Conquest in 1066 brought England under French rule.

Baudouin de Courtenay for many years studied the different Indo-European languages, wrote his scientific works not only in Russian and Polish, but also in German, French, Czech, Italian, Lithuanian and other languages. Working in expeditions that studied Slavic languages and dialects, he fixed their phonetic features. His discoveries in the field of comparative (typological) analysis of Slavic languages have anticipated the emergence of ideas that later found their way into the works of eminent typological slavicist Jakobson. The theme of my diploma work sounds as following: “Abbreviation and other types of shortening in the aspect of their functions in Modern English language”. The actuality of this work caused by several important points. It is safe to say that nowadays the shortening of the words is one of the main trends in the development of Modern English language, especially in its colloquial layer, which, in its turn at high degree is supported by constant development of modern informational technologies and simplification of speech with no loss of its informative content. So the significance of this work can be proved by the following reasons: a) Shortening of words is one of the developing branches of lexicology nowadays.
