  1. Abstract

Netvalue Limited Company requested to SNC (Systematic Network Consultant) Team to create a proposal about the new design of LAN and WAN for their company. It consists of three parts. First part gives recommendation about LAN & WAN design, transmission medium, and protocols. Comparison of programming languages can be found in second part. This part also includes information about programming language translator software for the selected language. Last part consists of suggestions about multimedia hardware.

  1. Gantt chart

  1. Introduction

3.1 Company Background

Netvalue Public Limited, the only supplier of business equipment and office supplies in South East Asia has hired our team as IT consultants in order to develop a local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) for their company. The purpose of developing these networks are to enhance the company productivity and to enable the company to compete against their new rivals who plan to put Netvalue out of business.

3.2 Company Requests

The owners of Netvalue Company request our team to design a LAN for the headquarter and WAN to connect all the branches together. And also, requested information about types of networks, multimedia resources, internet connections, suitable protocols and operation of programming language translator applications are chosen to implement in the project.

3.3 Assumptions

Our team was told that the budget allocated to develop this project is approximately RM380, 000). In order to, develop this project there are some assumptions that need to be considered which suitable to build network design for NetValue Company.

NetValue Company has 6 branches located in the south east of Asia which are:-

- The headquarter will be located in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

- The second branch will be located in Malaysia (Sunway)

- The third branch will be located in Malaysia (Bukit Jalil)

- The fourth branch will be located in Malaysia (Malacca)

- The fifth branch will be located in Malaysia (Sabah)

- The sixth branch will be located in Malaysia (Sarawak)

The headquarters of the company (main office) is 4 story building consists of five different departments with approximately consist of 40 LAN network users.

- First floor has the Customer Service Department

- Second floor has the Marketing Department

- Third floor has Human Resource Department

- Forth floor has Accounting and Information Technology Department

3.4 Problem Identification

- No local area network (The Company locally own a building and they have 40 staff and this number is still growing and the company does not have an internal internet connection which makes the staff have difficulty to contact and communicate with one another inside the building  and difficulty communication with the external world).

- There is no external network connection (The Company has five branches, and these five new offices has no connection among one another and without the connection there is a difficulty to make communication in  branches which are incorporate the retail concept coupled with local sales offices).

- Lack to know the types of devices that the Company will need within the office (The Company want to set up office with specific number of employees (35 to 40) in each office. Consequently, the company wants to determine and consider the types of devices such as printers, display devices, audio devices, microphones, LCD projectors and to take into account whether or not fax machines, fax modem, and/or multifunction peripherals are required or not).

3.5 Solution

- Set up LAN network that connects all departments in the company headquarters

- Set up WAN network that connects all branches together with headquarters.

- Identify and choose what the best programming language to implement in the project.

- Identify and apply internet technology for LAN and WAN.

- Identify and choose the suitable types of devices that the Company will need within its offices.

- Identify and choose five suitable protocols.

4.1.1 Logical Design

Figure 1: Logic Design

4.1.2 Physical Design

Figure 2: Physical Design

4.1.3 Introduction of the LAN design

The (figure 2) shows the new LAN Design for replacement of the current network, there are 5 departments (Customer Service Department, Marketing Department, Human Resource Department, Accounting department, Information technology department) and each department’s users are connected by using Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables with workgroup switches in a form of star topology, and the switches are connected together with the backbone Switch by using STP FDDI topology. The backbone also connected directly with print Server and Application server as mentioned in the case study, and also connected with a proxy server which connected with a router and VPN for internet security purpose, firewall for extra security purpose.

Lastly, an additional e-mail server and database server which will needed for those department to work efficiently.

4.1.4 Network topology comparison

Although, there are others network topologies which are more reliability. But, other than choosing the best topology, our team also consider the cost and avoid unnecessary the expanses for our client.

Figure 3: Mesh Topology

For example, mesh topology. It is a topology which provide each nodes have dedicated connection to all the nodes, this will prevent link down and also provide very good speed compare to any others network topology. But, it is also one of the reasons of not choosing it for forming the network, because it required a lots of cables [n (n-1)/2], to connect each of the computer dedicatedly and will wasted a lots of switch’s ports, which will cause extra expanses in cabling and switches when the network grows bigger.

Figure 4: Bus Topology

Secondly, bus topology, although bus topology is the cheapest and easy maintain network topology. But, considering the growth of the number of users in the future, bus topology actually is not a good choice, because it will become slow when there are too many users transmitting or transmitting large files. And the most important is, if the backbone cable breakdown, it will cause the entire network breakdown.

4.1.5 FDDI Backbone

Figure 5: FDDI

FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) are topology which able to provide 100mbps transmission rate and with dual ring (clockwise and anti-clockwise) connecting by using fiber optic cables.

It is one of the famous fast backbone topology has been mentioned in a book (upgrade & troubleshooting network) under high speed backbone. With this topology as backbone, speed and reliability are ensured, because it is connected with fiber optic cable, which is the fastest transmission rate cable which using ray light to transfer, and it formed with dual ring, it will be able to ensure the network works as usual even one ring is down.

FDDI is very flexible because it is compatible with any cables, which means it is able to replace by any cable instead of using fiber optic cable.

Compared to ring and star topology, it is more reliable as mentioned, because it is form with dual rings.

In the server room, it will require 5 servers which are Database server, E-mail server, print Server, Application server and proxy server, all connected with the backbone switch and also both database connected with database server with STP cable – cat 5e, this is because to provide fast transmission speed (1gbps) since server and database are shared resources.

To connect the workgroup switches together to the backbone switch using FDDI with fiber optics cable. This will promised the speed of transferring and receiving data.

4.2.2 First floor: Customer Service Department network

For the Customer service Department which placed on the First floor, there are 10 employees working in this department. As the name of the department shows that the job is to answer phone call, retrieve information from the database and provide useful information to their customer, this jobs often required to use phone and e-mail services with fast retrieving data speed from the database.

Figure above shows the new Customer Service Department Network design. It applied star topology, so each single user is connected with a dedicated port of the workgroup switch with STP cat 5. The reason of giving dedicated port and choosing STP cat 5 is to provide the speed of sending and receive data over the network, as mentioned because this department required fast network speed to deal with their customers without putting them on phone too long.

As mentioned, this department jobs will involve of receives and replying customer’s e-mail. So, placing an E-mail server is important in here, it more secure, fast, and reliable compare to public e-mail service.

Lastly, will be assigned with 2 printers in as basic department requirement in order to work efficiently.

4.2.3 Second Floor: Marketing Department network

Marketing department is placed in second floor, with 8 employees. Marketing jobs involve lots of paper work and it also required doing presentation to intro their plans and ideas.

The new design of the marketing department network figure (above) using star topology to provides dedicated connection port for each of the nodes to guarantee every node are having high connection speeds. Other than speed, it also connected with 4 printers which will be needed for heavy printing duty.

As mentioned, marketing department required a lot of meetings, so there will be set-up a projector in the meeting room. And lastly, 2 fax machines for faxing or receive fax purpose.

4.2.4 Third Floor: Human Resource Department

This department contain with 10 employees, their job is to train and hire employees for the company. In this department, it will require a database to store lots of employees’ information.

In the new design of fourth floor (figure above), Accounting and IT Department will share a workgroup switch because each of the departments have just 6 employees and based on the field, these two department would not grow much.

It will separated to form a department network by implementing VLAN (Virtual LAN), so each of the department will have their own network and the broadcast will be limited within the VLAN, although they are sharing 1 workgroup switch. Each of the nodes will have own dedicated port connections to ensure the speeds. In this floor there will be assigning with 2 printers and both of the department will share them together, because Based on the jobs of these departments, their printing is not as heavy as Marketing department.
